No flooring project is complete without moldings—they are what make transitions seamless, staircases safe, and edges look clean and intentional. Without the right trim pieces, even the most beautiful floor can feel unfinished. So, which moldings might your space need—and what purpose does each one serve? Let’s take a closer look at the different types of trim pieces that bring a flooring installation together.

    End Molding

Ideal for transitioning between hardwood or laminate flooring and a different surface—such as carpet, sliding glass doors, or the edge of a fireplace. It provides a clean, finished look where planks end.

    Quarter Round

This finishing trim frames the perimeter of your flooring and neatly covers the expansion gap between the floor and the wall. It’s a subtle detail that creates a clean, polished edge.

    Reducer

Designed to transition between two surfaces of different heights—like wood flooring and tile or vinyl—a reducer creates a smooth, sloped bridge that helps prevent tripping and keeps the flow consistent.

    Stair Nose

A durable trim piece used where flooring meets the edge of a step. It provides a finished look while adding extra stability and protection to both the tread and riser—essential for safety and style on staircases.

    T-Molding

Used to bridge the expansion gap between two level surfaces—such as between rooms with the same flooring or different hard surfaces at the same height. It allows for natural movement while maintaining a seamless transition.

Every detail matters when it comes to flooring—and moldings are no exception. These finishing pieces not only serve important functional roles, but they also enhance the overall look and feel of your space. Whether you’re renovating a single room or installing floors throughout your home, be sure to include the right trim pieces to complete the job with confidence.

To assist you, each Urbanfloor product detail page on our website includes a list of compatible moldings and their measurements, making it simple to find the perfect match for your flooring. For further guidance, please contact your local Urbanfloor retailer or contact us directly—we’re committed to supporting your project every step of the way.
