Nostalgia is always at its height this time of year. Did you ever play with toy Lite Brites as a kid? I remember my cousin had a set we would play with. And those retro light up ceramic trees have made a comeback as well, I’m seeing them everywhere. This lighted holiday tree canvas art reminds me of both the Lite Brites and the lighted ceramic trees.
I had the idea of lighting up a canvas art print so that in the evening hours the wintery tree on the canvas looked like it was strung with lights. I created this canvas art that is lit from behind with battery operated lights, it’s enchanting!
The supplies to make your own are easy, all you need is a tree scene on canvas (I used this snowy winter landscape), battery operated string lights, a hot glue gun, and you’re in business.
I took these pictures just as the sun was setting so the canvas was all aglow. That’s not painted light on the canvas, it’s real light coming from behind the canvas, although a little hard to tell in a photograph.
It’s a charming effect on a winter’s eve – there’s no such thing as too many twinkle lights and this is another way to add them to a space during the holidays.
The process was simple, I ordered this canvas print and it shipped in three days. I had a set of wire twinkle lights in my holiday bin.
I punctured holes in the canvas using a martini olive pick, then pushed the individual lights through the holes in the canvas, and hot glued them one by one to the back. I also glued the battery box to the inside of the back of the canvas to allow for access to the batteries to add fresh batteries each year. I shared a video on Instagram showing the process.
