The cliché ‘it’s better to be safe, than sorry’ applies in home break-ins too. It’s always better to be safe and not sorry–you can spend far less in that case than it will cost you to go the traditional route of hiring a monitoring service.
Also, if you’re going to be away for a lengthy period, consider having your neighbors pick up your mail and notify the post office that you’ll be away for a while.
