Mid December holiday greetings! Our daughter came home from college yesterday so now it’s a week of Christmas cheer for us, wrapping gifts and baking treats. My daughter loves to cook so I gladly handed the reins to her for making dinners this week. I finished a little bit more decorating, I moved our tree to the family room this year instead of the living room, and my faux lighted garland up the stairs always looks festive during the season. Most of my shopping is complete so I’ll be spending the week in my coziest pajamas watching holiday movies and…

I was talking with my siblings yesterday and we were comparing modern price tags and marketing with the Christmas season of our youth. We were all born in the 1970s and grew up in the 1980s and we were reminiscing how times have changed. We concluded in our memory, this season used be much simpler and far less stressful. There are those who look forward to this time of year to decorate their homes top to bottom. There are those that cherish the religious meaning of the holiday. There are those who look forward to the family gatherings, and there…

I changed my ways several years ago and decided to make December about slowing down and enjoying the season. It meant I had to remove the pressure of perfection and people pleasing by dramatically shortening my to do list, and it’s made all the difference. I used to send out dozens of holiday cards, deck the halls from floor to ceiling, and throw a huge house party. Now I simply decorate the tree and hang garlands, greenery, and a few twinkle lights, then I sit on my sofa with my coziest blanket sipping something warm. The switch has helped me…
The asymmetrical mantel display has been trending for a few years, those garlands that are off center and swag to the left or right. This year I created an asymmetrical garland in my living room and I love the way it turned out. Mine is a combination of mixed real garland (fir and juniper) and faux pine garland that I can reuse, with eucalyptus added for texture and scent. Mini string lights and gold berries complete the look. I share a few more up close shots on Instagram. Asymmetrical garlands take more time to install than symmetrical ones. It requires…
I’ve been busy this week preparing for the Holiday Bazaar I’m participating in this weekend. In addition to holiday prints and ceramics I made a few ornaments to sell as well. I made ceramic state ornaments (similar to these) at my local clay studio in addition to the hand painted baubles below. I spied these shapely bisque ceramic ornaments online and couldn’t wait to get creative with them. I painted a dozen abstract and botanical motif ornaments with them to sell at the market this weekend. Here’s a glimpse of a few I’ve completed so far. If…
Over the last 17 years, we’ve decorated a whole bunch of houses for the holidays and it means that we have favorite methods and items when it comes to decking the halls. And why is finding the best Christmas tree lights so hard?! The point is, we’ve tried a ton of holiday decorations, and this post is your one-stop shop for photos, ideas, info, and links to our favorite things – from the faux Christmas trees that we like best to our go-to outdoor lights (if you ask John’s special eyes, there is definitely a correct temperature). In this post…
If you’ve just had a hardwood floor installed, chances are you’re already enjoying it. Hardwood flooring not only significantly elevates the style and aesthetic of any home, but experts have even attested that hardwood can also significantly improve air quality. With the holiday season rapidly approaching, you might be thinking about how impressed your house guests will be with your new flooring. However, keeping it protected during this busy time of year is imperative when it comes to ensuring your floor’s longevity. Not to worry, there are multiple ways to protect your newly installed hardwood floor from the holiday ordeal.…
I’ve enjoyed a few days off with family visiting from all over since we hosted the big feast this year. We said goodbye to everyone this morning and it was nice to take time away from work and projects to enjoy the Thanksgiving week with them. Now my focus is on a big market coming up this weekend where I’ll be selling and also making sure everyone I love has something special to open on Christmas. It’s time for gift ideas! We all heart Target and the big box stores, and with free shipping and Amazon deliveries, shopping during this…
