It was my last weekend in Florida, I spent it cleaning and organizing since I’m flying back to California. I photographed our primary bedroom, it’s quite a transformation, I’ll share those pictures on Tuesday. We have the best property manager and the coolest neighbors who keep an eye on our home while we’re absent, how wonderful is that? I was filled with so much gratitude for the weeks I spent here, it was the loveliest summer. I’m excited about spending fall back home in California, although I’m not quite ready for autumn decorating. That’s the wonderful thing about August, it’s…

Got little bugs buzzing around your kitchen? Congratulations, you may have fruit flies! Don’t fret. These annoying pests are pretty common but luckily, it doesn’t take a lot of money, supplies, or effort to get rid of them. In fact, you can probably find everything you need in your cabinets! We recently had a fruit fly problem in our home (the first time in over four years here – we have no idea what brought them in). So I seized the opportunity to test 7 different methods of eliminating them. Yes, there were copious notes taken and even a spreadsheet.…

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working on a makeover on our primary bedroom and one of the projects recently finished is this painted rattan paneled dresser.   Originally it was a dark charcoal stain which didn’t work with the coastal vibe I was trying to create in this space. The dresser came with the house when we bought it back in 2022 (see these pics which show the original bedroom). I shopped around a bit for a replacement but then came to my senses and realized since it fit the wall perfectly, all it needed was to be…

After six months away from my ceramics studio, I was eager to get back so I signed up for an intermediate class for the fall to continue my education with clay. My inspiration files grow by the day, I have so many ideas in my head that I want to create. Having learned the stages of ceramics through courses and studio hours, I have a deep appreciation for the talents of those who bring clay vessels to life. I’m drawn to anything that’s unique in sculptural form, texture, or glaze. From time to time I like to feature artists or…

A friend of mine is pregnant and it’s reminding me how exciting it was to name our own kids. We love traditional names (aka: old-fashioned names, aka classic names) and both of our children are named after our grandparents – one on John’s side and one on my side. So I had fun putting together this list of my favorite 100 classic boy names. They feel established, like they stand the test of time, and can carry special meaning if they’re already names in your family. ALSO IS THERE ANYTHING CUTER THAN BABY SUSPENDERS?!? One interesting thing I found when…

I’ll be the first to admit that South Dakota wasn’t high on my vacation bucket list. But I ended up there this summer on a dad-and-daughter trip I took with some family members: and WOW, we loved it. It was a surprising and wonderful departure from our usual family trips, so I wanted to share some highlights in case anyone else is interested in breaking out of the more typical beach or theme park vacation routine. Growing up on the East Coast and now living in Florida, I haven’t spent much time in the upper Midwest. So these sights may…

Hello friends! It was quiet this week on the blog, thank you for understanding. It felt right to spend the week with my family here in Florida as an end to summer instead of on my laptop. We had a lovely time together, trying new restaurants, taking walks on the beach at sunset, cooking a few meals at home, and lounging around in the afternoons and evenings having great conversations. I felt so much gratitude for the ability to spend time with my adult children and hear all their perspectives on life and their plans for the near future. I…

Sometimes the simplest projects can be so satisfying! In our Florida house we had a lot of straight edge room transitions and I’ve been dreaming of adding arches to doorways for some time. When I discovered this Etsy shop, I saw I could make it happen as an easy DIY home improvement project. No lumber or power tools required! I used two sets of these custom made arch pieces from Bryan’s Etsy shop Arch Friends to transform two of my transitional doorways. This was the original transition from the entry to my mini home office…. ….no longer a straight edge…
