A new lawn can instantly transform your garden, adding lush colour and fantastic curb appeal. Laying turf correctly, however, is a precise job. It’s all about the preparation—get the groundwork right, and the laying new turf tips are simple. When considering how to lay turf in the UK, follow this professional guide to turf installation preparation.

Phase 1: Turf installation preparation is everything

The quality of your finished lawn depends entirely on what lies beneath.

    • Clear the area: Remove all existing grass, weeds, stones, and debris. This is the first, crucial step.
    • Dig and aerate: Use a spade or rotavator to turn over the soil to a depth of around 15cm. This breaks up compacted soil and improves drainage.
    • How to level ground for turf: This must be done meticulously.
      • Rake the soil to break up clods and create a smooth, even surface.
      • ‘Tread’ the area by shuffling across every square foot in small steps. This eliminates air pockets which cause sinking later.
      • Rake again to ensure perfect flatness.
    • Improve the soil: Incorporate a small amount of topsoil or fertiliser into the top layer to give the new turf roots a nutrient-rich start.
    • Moisten: Lightly water the soil so it’s moist, but not saturated or muddy.

Phase 2: Laying and rolling techniques

Once the groundwork is complete, you need to be ready to lay the turf immediately upon delivery to prevent it drying out.

    • The starting point: Begin laying along the longest straight edge (like a patio or path). Unroll the first strip, matching the edge perfectly.
    • Work from a plank: Never stand directly on the newly laid turf or prepared soil. Use wide planks of wood placed across the lawn area to distribute your weight.
    • Stagger the joints: Lay the second row like brickwork—staggering the joints of the turf rolls. This prevents visible seams and helps the lawn knit together evenly.
    • Butt, don’t overlap: Ensure the strips of turf are firmly butted together without overlapping, and avoid stretching the turf.
    • The final roll: Once all the turf is laid, use a lawn roller (or a piece of planked wood) to gently roll or press the entire area. This ensures excellent contact between the turf roots and the prepared soil beneath.

When is the best time to lay turf in the UK?

While turf can technically be laid year-round (avoiding frost or drought), the best time to lay turf in the UK is typically mid-autumn (September/October) or mid-spring (March/April). The soil is warm and moist, which encourages the roots to establish quickly without the stress of summer heat or winter cold.
