What a perfect way to end the summer with these images from our breezy primary bedroom at our home in Florida. This was a budget makeover, I repurposed the main pieces of furniture and didn’t buy too many new things other than the bench and mirror and some new IKEA cabinets to update the wardrobe niche.

Many of the trends in interior design right now are moody darker traditional interiors, but I didn’t want that at all for the space where I sleep. I wanted to wake up in a light and bright space layered with soft blues but in a cozy coastal style, so that’s what I created.

The paint on the walls is Behr ‘White Mocha’, the room was painted this color when we bought the house two years ago, the color is pale putty with a hint of peach that actually works for this space so lucky me I didn’t have to repaint the bedroom.

I’ve never styled a bedroom with a bed under a window before but given the smaller size and layout of the room, under the window is the only sensible place for the wider eastern king size bed.

Long time readers just might recognize the curtain fabric, it’s from this window treatment I featured from many years ago.

I’ve been holding on to this fabric for nine years! I brought it with me to Florida and had enough for full curtains on both sides of the window. It’s an older P Kauffman fabric but I can’t find it in production anymore, the closest would be this Thibaut fabric in the aqua color.

The bed accent pillows are from this Etsy shop, two 24” pillows in the green spa leaves pattern, and one 14×36” lumbar in the green spa perry fabric.

The shell artwork is mine, you can find the Scallop Collection print and the Spiral Collection online in my print shop.

I ordered the natural cane bench online and felt really good when I saw the same bench for four times more at this higher retail listing.

Across from the bed there used to be a large niche inside the wall with melamine shelves stretching across it. I had used it for storage of miscellaneous items but it was always looking cluttered, so Matt helped me give the space a makeover using IKEA Billy cabinets with Oxberg doors.

Before as you can see it was just a row of shelves, functional but boring with no doors to hide anything.

We added two tall skinny IKEA Billy cabinets and a short Billy cabinet, then framed it with 4” baseboard all around so now it looks built in and offers hidden storage.

I considered painting the wardrobes but instead left them simple and white, they add useful storage for hats, shoes, and casual clothing. To avoid the look of lockers with the use of just tall cabinets, I left a niche in the middle for display and jewelry storage.

I shared the rattan dresser makeover last week. The dresser came in a matching set with the bed frame (see below) so adding the rattan to the drawer fronts helped to distinguish the two as separate pieces.

Here’s the wide view of the bedroom a year ago with the matching bedroom set that came with the house. We swapped the dated ceiling fan for a quiet modern version.

and then freshened everything else in the bedroom space too.

All the plants in the space are faux since we don’t live here full time, and we also rent it for two months during the snowbird season. The lamps are from Home Goods, the textured grasscloth lampshades I bought here. I found the sage green quilt at HomeGoods about six months ago but I tracked down the same brand of cross stich quilt which you can buy in multiple colors here.

Repurposing the furniture kept the cost of the makeover low and the style of the space complements the style of the home. The bedroom space will also be renter friendly with the removal of personal items. I’m pleased with how cozy and relaxing it turned out to be.
