Fleas are more than just an annoyance; they can cause irritating bites for pets and humans, and a significant infestation can feel overwhelming. While over-the-counter flea sprays offer temporary relief, achieving complete flea eradication often requires a professional whole-house chemical treatment. This involves meticulous preparation and the careful application of professional-grade insecticides.

    Understanding the flea life cycle

Effective flea treatment for house targets all stages of the flea life cycle:

    • Eggs: Fall off pets into carpets, bedding, and cracks.
    • Larvae: Hatch from eggs, move away from light, and feed on flea dirt (dried blood droppings).
    • Pupae: Larvae spin cocoons, which are highly resilient and can remain dormant for months. This stage is very difficult to kill with chemicals alone.
    • Adult fleas: Emerge from pupae when vibrations (like you walking by) signal a host is near.

This complex cycle is why thorough preparation is so crucial for success.

Flea fumigation preparation checklist: before the professional arrives

This step is arguably as important as the treatment itself. Knowing how to prepare the house for flea spray properly will ensure the treatment is effective.

    • Vacuum, vacuum, vacuum: This is the most critical step. Thoroughly vacuum all carpets, rugs, upholstered furniture, pet bedding, and cracks in floorboards. The vibrations from vacuuming also stimulate pupae to hatch, exposing them to the treatment.
    • Empty: Clear floors of clutter, including toys, shoes, and any items that can obstruct the spray. Empty cupboards and drawers if the infestation is severe.
    • Wash bedding: All pet bedding, throws, and washable soft furnishings should be hot-washed (60°C or higher).
    • Treat pets: All pets must be treated by a vet on the same day as the property treatment. This stops them from re-introducing fleas.
    • Aquariums: Cover and turn off air pumps for aquariums.
    • People and pets: You, your family, and pets (including caged birds, reptiles, etc.) must vacate the property for several hours during and immediately after treatment. Your pest controller will advise on the exact duration.

Execution of a whole-house chemical treatment

    A professional pest controller will:

    • Apply residual insecticide: They will use a professional-grade residual insecticide spray on all floor areas, skirting boards, cracks, and upholstered furniture. This chemical remains active for several weeks, killing newly hatched fleas.
    • Insect Growth Regulator (IGR): Often, they will also apply an IGR. This chemical doesn’t kill adult fleas but disrupts the life cycle of eggs and larvae, preventing them from developing into biting adults.
    • Target hidden areas: They have the expertise to spray effectively into crevices and under furniture where fleas hide.

    Post-flea treatment cleaning

Your pest controller will advise on post-flea treatment cleaning. Generally, do not vacuum for at least 7–10 days after treatment to allow the insecticide to remain effective. After this period, regular vacuuming should resume.

The whole house flea treatment cost will vary based on property size, but it’s an investment in a flea-free home.
