Dyeing your clothes can sound difficult, messy, and downright scary. But guess what? It’s none of those things! After all, I’m the girl who dyed her wedding dress so I could wear it again. Trust me, anyone can dye clothes at home because it’s easy, straightforward, and crazy affordable. And it’s a great way to make things you just aren’t wearing a lot more wearable instead of just giving up on them. Or giving them closet space but never reaching for them because the color just isn’t your favorite. Dyeing fabrics is great way to customize, alter, or reinvigorate your…

It was the loveliest week, I cut my hair shorter, wore fall boots and sweaters, and enjoyed many moments in the soft sunshine. The trees all around are in full transition, showing off their red, orange, and yellow leaves so I spend as much time outdoors as possible. Yesterday we went to a birthday party for a friend with the most beautiful home. Off their living room was a full library with walnut shelving filled with books and collected things and a billiard table in the middle, it was like stepping on to a film set. Today I’m making a…
Perhaps you noticed in the most recent Fixer Upper reveal of the Lakehouse that Joanna chose a group of birds not once but twice to add interest to the walls of the living room and bathroom. A carved wood flock of three appears in the main living room and a brass trio hangs above the bathtub in the primary bath (see below). She recognizes when filling wall space there are many alternatives to canvas and framed art, and I was delighted to see our feathered friends appear as decor in this stunning renovation. Notice how smooth silhouettes, singular tones, and…
Good news for us, our Florida home was not damaged in Hurricane Milton which surprised us since the storm passed directly over Sarasota. We were prepared for the worst but relieved that our home was okay. I watched the news all week nervous about the impacts to the place we’ve come to love so much, and I was saddened to read about the devastation caused to the community. One thing I’ve learned about Floridians is they are resilient, they waste no time cleaning up and rebuilding. Currently, our home is rented to a family displaced by the storms so we’re…

Big renovations are exciting and fun, but it’s no secret that they can also be really stressful – especially when it’s one of those expensive, weeks-long, life-interrupting renovations like a kitchen or bathroom. Things go wrong, budgets get broken, timelines go haywire, and somehow there’s always dust everywhere. EVERYWHERE. So since we’ve renovated 7 houses over the past 17 years, we thought it might be helpful to share our best tips for preparing for & minimizing renovation stress. When planning a project it’s easy to only focus on the physical, financial, or logistical hurdles ahead of you. But today we’re…
It’s safe to say that we love traditional baby names (aka classic names or old-fashioned names). We named both of our kids after our grandparents – one on J’s side and one on mine. I recently heard names like that for baby girls being called “old lady names.” Not sure how I feel about that – but a timeworn and classic name just feels like it’s lovely and enduring. A friend of mine recently had a baby girl and it was fun to talk about all the names they were considering for her. And since I already shared a list…
We started using a homemade window cleaner last year and immediately regretted not switching sooner. Not only is it cheaper than storebought stuff like Windex, it also cleans better and without streaks! Plus, it only takes 2 ingredients (although more can be added). So grab an empty spray bottle and come see the light with us! That’s supposed to be a clean window pun, btw… Homemade cleaners can also be great for keeping a more eco-friendly home and reducing toxic chemicals around your house. But even if those aren’t drivers for you, how can you argue with better results and…
Greetings friends, it’s been two weeks since I posted. I flew to Florida to get our house ready for tenants arriving unexpectedly early due to the damage from the hurricane. Usually we rent the house January through May, but Helene displaced a lot of people on the barrier islands due to storm surge. So I’ve been working here in Sarasota moving our personal things into the storage shed and prepping the home for tenants who will need the house for four months. Thankfully we experienced no damage to the interior since our house is a half mile inland, only a…
